Research
My research interests focus on the intersections between technology, community, and entertainment, primarily on fandom communities and how they are challenging traditional studio production models through user-generated "produsage" content, and the resulting dichotomy between traditionally gift economy-based fandom communities (such as those devoted to fan fiction writing) and more mercenary fans who offer their products for sale in the non-licensed gray market or those who produce product for free in exchange for "swag" or commercial fan site access/products. I am interested in how these issues and their resolution may affect larger arenas of potential labor abuses of distributed digital workers, corporate/consumer relations and rights, as well as changes in copyright/IP philosophy and regulations.
