Josh Schendel, doctoral student in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Tennessee

Hi, my name is Josh Schendel and I'm a doctoral student in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Tennessee.  I was very excited to read your email.  As it turns out, I am focusing my research on communities (both real time and virtual) formed through cyberspace, in particular those found in online gaming.  I'm always on the lookout for people, projects, and research that could help me out, and I'm hoping you might be able to provide some good ideas. I bookmarked your website and completed your survey (below):

Even though we don't have any professors who specialize in this area, they are very supportive of student research.

No.  Would be cool though.

None specialize, but after I described the area, Dr. Faye V. Harrison, Dr. Benita J. Howell, (both cultural) and Dr. David G. Anderson (archaeology) all thought it sounded very interesting.

Dear Noah, There isn't anyone in our Department who does this kind of work.

Answers below.

Very little in a formal sense.

No, though we do teach some online courses and we have carried out some small-scale ethnographic research on the potential for e-learning in some Pacific societies.

I'm interested but haven't had the time or opportunity to explore these issues systematically as of yet.

We have concentrations in Medical and Business/Organizational anthropology that both overlap with computer-mediated anthropology (information technology and culture).  We also have a related Institute for Information Technology and Culture (see web site for that accessible from the Wayne State Anthropology web site).  Faculty offer courses that address technology issues, heavily focused on information technology, computers, etc.

Nothing specific on In oternet/cyperspace but some verlap with graduate seminars that deal in part with info technology.

Dr. Allen Batteau (you might contact him further on this issue)  Dr. Jacalyn Harden (starts this coming fall)

Not much, unfortunately. We do cover some issues of literacy in our "Language and Culture" class, and that has some potential connections with CMA, but that's it. So that pretty much answers all the following questions (or as N/A).
